Palaver

Dr Sally Kogsei easily strikes you as a lady in the wrong profession — politics. Her composed demeanour is not the stuff many politicians are made of. The former diplomat is often diplomatic in her utterances unlike your everyday politicians. However, it was not the usual Sally when she was explaining her apparent shift from the Raila camp of ODM. While Kosgei is the person entrusted with the noble task of ensuring the nation’s food security, among other responsibilities, she says she flies the flag on her car to weave through traffic jams. And as a leader, her subjects expect her to provide guidance but she has instead chosen to follow them rather than lead them.

When House Speaker Kenneth Marende made his ruling over the controversial nomination of four individuals to key constitutional offices, politicians and political analysts praised him. Many of them referred to the ruling as Solomonic wisdom. Maybe Marende wisdom will suffice, certainly not Solomonic. While Solomon made quick decisions that left no doubt who the guilty or the innocent parties were, Marende not only chose to be vague but also passed the buck to parliamentary committees.

With the generational change wave fast gaining momentum, the face of future leadership is likely to change dramatically. MP Mbuvi Kioko Sonko is already setting the pace. Apart from bling bling, the youthful MP was recently spotted in a meeting with ear studs and cherished every moment he attracted attention. What next for new generation leaders? Perhaps a sagging trouser here and a tumbo cut there!

The Rift Valley MPs who are opposed to Prime Minister Raila Odinga imagine they have a realistic chance of unseating him from premiership but it is the decision they are better advised not pursue: rather, they should resign enmasse from ODM and let him lose majority in the House, if they are brave enough to face by-elections. Talk of jumping from frying pan to fire.

And finally ....

Harambee Stars has been landing several invitations despite a streak of poor performances. Why the interest in our non-performing boys? It seems national teams eager to improve in Fifa rankings have discovered the secret of rising to the top.
