National women’s volleyball team Malkia Strikers have once again emerged as the best team in Africa after obliterating all competitors during the Africa Olympic qualifiers in Yaounde, Cameroon.
Their dominance on the continent was increasingly coming under threat from Cameroon whose players have turned professional and are playing in Europe.
However, Malkia Strikers’ exploits in Cameroon, which saw them book an Olympic ticket has once again confirmed that Kenya’s level in volleyball is beyond the rest in Africa.
So, while the team basks in the glory of the Olympics ticket and ruling Africa, the task ahead is tougher considering that at the Tokyo Olympics, they will face some of the best teams in the world.

Our preparation for the Games should start in good time and as coach Paul Bitok said, we need to train outside the country and play friendly matches against some of the teams that we will meet at the Olympics.
We therefore need to support Malkia Strikers as a nation -- the President, fans, corporates all the way to the Kenya Volleyball Federation.
A number of politicians starting with the President have already sent their congratulatory messages to the team, but now they need to walk the talk and ensure the players get the support they need including what the coach and the technical bench is asking for.
We must make a mark at the Olympic Games and that can only happen if the team gets the much-needed support. Kudos once again Malkia Strikers!
