Good move on KNEC exams

The recent move by the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) signals the Government's resolve to restore the integrity of national examinations. After dissolving the previous board and putting in place a new team to clean up the mess at the council, the new team has moved to scrap the already prepared exams and start afresh.

Apart from giving itself full control of the process, the move bestows all the responsibility to guard the exams on the new team since they will not have an excuse that the exams were prepared by a different team.

But these efforts are still not enough. Knec must come up with proactive measures of dealing with the threat of technology and improve supervision as well as the marking of exams. The reforms will not be complete without severely punishing all those involved in cheating from brokers, invigilators, school heads and other education officials.

In the past, only students have taken the biggest share of punishment with their results cancelled. Unless exam brokers are put behind bars, they will continue to lure students with leaked exam papers and water down all the efforts currently being undertaken.
