A multi-agency security team in Mwingi impounded over 10 vehicles and recovered contraband goods along Mwingi – Garissa highway.

During the operation, last night, Sh3 million in cash was also recovered from a 20-year-old man identified as Abdirahman Abdi.

He was travelling from Mandera to Nairobi.

Mwingi Central OCPD Peter Mutuma told Standard Digital that they erected a roadblock at Mutwangombe along the busy highway.

He said both public and private vehicles plying the route were impounded.

Mutuma revealed that some of the impounded goods included banned bales of polythene bags, boxes of canned fish and rolls of clothing materials.

They also recovered 100 bags of charcoal

The OCPD regretted that such contraband was killing the economy as it denied the government the much-needed revenue.

He added that preliminary investigation indicated that most of the goods had originated from Somalia and were being sneaked into the country illegally.

He noted that those arrested will be arraigned on Friday.
