A man suspected to be a bhang grower was shot in the leg as he allegedly resisted arrest at Maguria village in Embu North.

Two officers were injured during the scuffle. Police fired in the air to disperse youths who were pelting them with stones.

The 35-year-old man was rushed to the Embu Level Five Hospital and was said to be in a stable condition. Two of his friends were also arrested.

Residents said the two men had travelled from Ruai to give support to the injured man after learning that police planned to raid his bhang farm, which is in a valley called Babylon Holy Shrine, following a tip-off.

“The security officers had a hard time trying to arrest the three men, who were armed with machetes and knives. They had to call for reinforcements,” said a resident.

A police source said 60 large bhang plants were uprooted, adding that they were investigating the incident.
