Speaker hit with rotten eggs as MCAs fight

Rival factions fought inside the Machakos County Assembly and disrupted the budget speech.

Members of the County Assembly allied to Governor Alfred Mutua (pictured) found themselves on the receiving end as their opponents attacked them with rotten eggs and chairs.

The reading of the 2014/2015 budget had to be suspended for more than an hour following the chaos.

Assembly Speaker Benard Mungata was not spared as he left the chamber soaked in rotten eggs.

It took the intervention of the sergeant at arms and his team to separate the warring groups. The opposing MCAs argued it was illegal to hold the session in a small room within the assembly offices. The official chamber is under renovation.

A contingent of armed police led by Machakos police boss Joe Lekuta was called in to ensure that security prevailed within the assembly compound.

When the assembly resumed, the Speaker named 10 MCAs thought to have been behind the chaos and suspended them for the next three sittings.

The suspended leaders dismissed the suspension and said no amount of intimidation from any quarter would cow them from championing the rights of Machakos residents.

They blamed the crisis on a few individuals working for Governor Mutua, whom they asked to steer clear of assembly affairs.
