Research reveals the best day to engage in love making

Last week we told you the best times of day to do something for better health, but what about the best days – and the worst – of the week?

Turns out if you want some mind-blowing sex, try Thursday.

Need to have an operation? Avoid Sundays.

Here’s your ultimate wellbeing guide to the week ahead.

Monday: Start a diet and quit smoking

This is the best day to start losing weight as you’ll have a better chance of sticking to your diet.

According to a Tesco poll of women trying to slim down over the previous year, we are more much more motivated to continue if we start afresh at the beginning of the week.

It’s also the most popular day for smokers to give up.

A four-year study, published in the JAMA Internal Medicine journal, found the number of internet searches for advice on how to kick the habit were 25% higher on Monday than the rest of the week.

However, in other ways it does live up to its reputation as the gloomiest day of the week. A 10-year study by the Office for National Statistics found it the most popular day for suicides.

And the stress of returning to work after over-indulging at the weekend also makes it the most likely day to suffer a heart attack.

But if you do find yourself in hospital, the good news is that you have the best chance of getting better.

Data collected from four million operations in NHS hospitals over four years found that patients get the best results from surgery on Mondays.

This is due a higher number of medical staff being on duty who are well rested after the weekend.

Tuesday: Give birth and get busy but avoid the GP surgery

If you’re pregnant, this is the day to pack your bags for the hospital. A survey of maternity units has revealed this is their busiest time.

But if you need to see your GP, don’t make an appointment today because the surgery will still be crammed with people who rang up for an appointment on Monday after falling sick over the weekend, according to researchers.

So if you don’t want to be stuck in the waiting room, try delaying until Wednesday when the queues will have tailed off.

Tuesday is also the day when we are at our most productive, making it the best time to blitz that to-do list.

After the Monday blues have worn off, the left of our brain – the side that dominates rational, organised thought – kicks into action and starts working at its best, according to the US Society for Industrial and Organisational Psychology.

Wednesday: Sleep deeply

Now we hit midweek, tiredness and less late night drinking means Wednesday is when we get our best night’s sleep, according to a study of alarm clock users.

If you need to head to the shops and you don’t want your blood pressure to rise, choose Wednesday afternoon. According to the British Retail Consortium, this is the quietest time in stores.

It’s also the best time to catch your boss and ask for a rise. A poll of more than 1,500 workers by Office Angels found seven out of 10 are more receptive to requests for money on this day.

Wednesday works best because bosses are too busy planning for the week on Monday, and by Thursday they are thinking ahead to the weekend.

Thursday: Have good sex but don't go to hospital

Making love today should feel better than at any other time of the week.

Researchers at the London School of Economics found the build-up of the stress chemical cortisol over the week – which stimulate sex hormones – peaks on a Thursday.

But while it may be good for your love life, this is not a good day to check into hospital. According to a study by the Institute for Public Policy Research, you will be forced to stay in more than 24 hours longer than the rest of the week. This is mainly because any test results may not come back in until after the weekend.

Friday: Be in a good mood but beware breaking your diet

It’s no surprise to learn that Friday is also the day when it’s hardest to get out of bed – we rise at an average time of 8.12am compared with 6.59 am on Monday, says a study of 326,000 alarm clock users. But even if it makes us late for work, we are in the best mood of the week, according to the same survey.

Take care on the roads on this day. Friday is when you are most likely to have an accident, according to motoring specialists Accident Exchange.

The study found the end- of-the-week rush hour is when 17% of all car accidents happen, as millions of workers head home.

And if you have been dieting all week, beware of falling off the wagon. This is the day when dieters are most likely to cheat, claims the Tesco diet survey. And that’s because they feel they deserve a treat after a stressful week.

Saturday: Give birth to a future Prime Minister!

After a busy week, it’s finally time for a lie-in. On average, we get 27 minutes more kip on a Saturday morning.

Saturday is also the day to give birth if you want your child to be a future Prime Minister. The Office for National Statistics reveals that almost one in three of the British premiers since 1900 have been born on this day.

But be on your guard around 6.30pm tonight, as that’s the most likely time for an accident in the kitchen

A study by the charity Electrical Safety First found that four slip-ups, such as pan fires, take place every second around this time because this is when the nation is busiest cooking.

Sunday: Be happiest but don't have an operation

It may be traditionally be the day of rest, but more people break bones on a Sunday than any other day of the week, according to Danish scientists.

The figures are boosted by the high number of amateur sports matches and the fact that kids are more likely be active outside, doing things like riding bikes.

On the plus side, the end of the week is also the happiest.

Scientists at American’s University of Vermont analysed global internet traffic and found that the most positive, upbeat messages were sent on this day.

However, it’s by far the worst day to have an operation, according to a study by the British Medical Journal.

Patients who go under the knife are 80 per cent more likely to die than if they have the procedure on a Monday.

That’s because senior doctors are less likely to be on duty on this day.
