Embu Saccos in rush to comply with transport regulations

By JOSEPH MUCHIRI

EMBU COUNTY: Matatu operators rushed to the Embu Inspection Centre in a last minute bid to beat the deadline to have their vehicles inspected for compliance with the National Transport Security Authority (NTSA) regulations.

Gerald Kanari, the official in charge of the centre, said there was a surge in the number of motor vehicles since Friday.

Mr Kanari said they inspected over 30 vehicles on Friday, adding that they expected the numbers to surpass that as matatus tried to comply with the new regulations. He said most matatu crew and owners chose to wait until the last minute to comply even though they have been sensitising them on the need for early compliance through matatu saccos.

The official said since March 1, they had inspected over 250 vehicles whereas they target about 350 vehicles from the region.

He said they had turned away a few vehicles mostly on technical issues after their wiring or tyres were found defective and they referred them to fitters.
