Win for Nyanza as Ruto's projects take shape

[Michael Mute/Standard] President William Ruto's government has stepped up its efforts to deliver several infrastructural projects to transform Nyanza's economy. This comes as the political relationship with ODM leader Raila Odinga continues to blossom, with a promise to expand the bag of political goodies for a region that suffered neglect by past regimes. While the president and his team are running against the clock to honor some of the projects he rolled out after he came into office, contractors are on overdrive as they seek to beat deadlines. In Siaya, the construction of Ugunja Water Treatment plant has been completed and has been operationalized to serve at least 8,000 households. According to Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, who is coordinating the delivery of the projects, the project is designed to enhance access to clean and safe water for thousands of residents in Ugunja and its environs. "At the heart of this initiative is an intake system with an 8,400 cubic meter treatment capacity, ensuring a steady supply of purified water, " says Dr Omollo. The establishment also serves as a training hub for students from institutions such as Bondo and Rarieda Technical Institutes, Maseno University, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University, and KIWASI in water treatment and management. The plant features elevated steel storage tanks strategically positioned at Nyambiro, Yenga, St. Sylvester Anyiko, Mandungu and a concrete ground tank at Got Osimo. The project complements other projects the government is pursuing in the region, including affordable housing projects in Kisumu, Siaya, and Homa Bay. In Kisumu, the construction of the housing units are at an advanced stage and is already transforming the city's skyline. Similarly, in Alego Usonga, the affordable housing project is also promising to transform the region's landscape and improve access to housing. According to Dr Omollo, the project, which aims to deliver 882 housing units, will be completed within 18 months. Dr Omollo says work on four blocks has reached the first-floor slab stage, with formwork actively underway, adding that a total of 230 workers have been engaged in the project. The development comes as the region eyes more projects after the cabinet endorsed additional projects for the region on Tuesday. In a cabinet meeting that was chaired by President William Ruto at State House, Nyanza region got key projects that would mark a significant step towards improving governance, service delivery, and workforce productivity. Kisumu's iconic Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) was elevated to a national teaching and referral facility and established as a state corporation. In Siaya County, the cabinet approved the upgrading of Siaya Institute of Technology to national polytechnic status. The institution, which was founded 1987, has been offering competitive training in the fields of agriculture, applied technology, and business. It has invested in modern facilities, including an ICT laboratory, classes, and workshops to cater for the growing number of students.
