MPs want theft of Sh100m gear at data centre probed

The Parliamentary Committee on Finance is now calling for full investigations into how equipment worth over Sh100 million was vandalised from Naivasha's stalled Data Recovery Centre (DRC).

Through its chairman Kimani Kuria, the committee wondered how the equipment from the heavily guarded institution was carted away.

Last week, members of the committee who visited the centre learnt that Sh3.2 billion was required to fully operationalise it.

In an interview, the Molo MP noted that this was the only data recovery centre in the country, adding that the equipment theft was a major blow to the country.

“It’s unclear how equipment worth over Sh100 million was vandalised from this facility and it's time that the DCI and the Ministry of ICT fully investigated this loss,” he said.

Kuria warned that the government stood to lose Sh600 million every year for failing to honour a court ruling that awarded the contractor Sh3.6 billion as compensation for the abandoned project.
