Members of the Nyamira County Assembly traded insults and hurled abuses against each other after differing over a committee report.

The MCAs differed over a four-day retreat that 11 members took to Kisumu to conduct House Committee business with some saying the representatives only pocketed allowances without doing the actual job.

They had only one business- constituting two standing committees, the Public Investment and Accounts Committee and that of Budget and Appropriations, in which George Mosiori and George Nyachae were appointed as Chairpersons respectively.

Despite the accusations from a section of the MCAs, it was unclear how the ward reps spent four days at a five-star hotel.

The issue was barred at the floor of the House as the Leader of Majority Duke Masira prepared to read Report by the Selections Committee, said to have been born from the controversial meeting.

Some members claimed it never took place.

It could not be established who among the group was telling the truth as they engaged in a near-fist fight exchange while debating at the plenary.

For close to three hours, the Assembly turned into a House of chaos and name calling as its members engaged in shouting matches following a disagreement over changes in the House Committees.

Bomwagamo MCA Charles Barongo said only a few members of the Selection Committee privately met and drew a list of the Committee leadership positions which the Majority Leader was tabling.

“I can swear that only few people from this Committee met and made their own list of the pre-determined names which they want to present now,” Barongo said.

The MCAs engaged in accusations and counter-accusations over the manner in which the report was drawn.

The entire session that lasted from 2.30 pm to around 4 pm was characterised by protests and insults among the MCAs who took sides between those in support of the Report and those against.

Ekerenyo Ward MCA Thadeus Nyabaro sparked the protests after he claimed that no meeting took place in Kisumu where they had convened.

“The list of Committee constitution is tailored on the basis of who was supporting Gesami and who was not,” Nominate MCA Violet Nyakora claimed.

Speaker Moffat Teya was on three occasions forced to quell the rising temperatures but immediately he sat, the chaos would continue.

However, Teya said he will have to revisit the Committee’s Hansard report and investigate before making a final ruling.
