Business premises demolished in Kitale town

More than 100 business premises have been demolished in Kitale town following a directive by the Kenya Railways Corporation which is reclaiming its land for resumption of train services in the agricultural town.

The demolitions started late Friday following the expiry of a vacation notice.

Rift Valley regional commissioner George Natembea toured the town to kick off the exercise.

Among those affected are hotels, retail shops, churches, guest houses, bars, among other business premises.

"Those who encroached on railway land are hereby called upon to vacate to give room for resumption of train services," said Natembea.

Businessman Manase Nyaga had obtained a court order from the chief magistrate's court barring the demolition of his premises but that did not work in his favour.
