Ezekiel Mutua roasted over 'Watu Wote' copyright infringement

Kenya Film Classification Board CEO Dr.Ezekiel Mutua on Friday, March 23 found himself on the receiving end when Kenyans on twitter questioned his participation in the recent Oscar event in Hollywood. Mr. Mutua’s troubles begun when the makers of Oscar-nominated movie Watu Wote, Germany’s Hamburg Media School accused him of screening the film in the US without their permission. In a series of tweets using the Watu Wote handle, the school said Dr. Mutua, popularly known as ‘Moral Cop’ for his strictness in handling moral matters, had no rights to screen the film. They further stated that they had to issue a statement to movie fans who were already questioning when the movie will be out for public viewing. The school maintains that it holds all copyrights for the film and the rights to exhibit it privately or in public. As the owners of all copyrights for Watu Wote, we want to point out very clearly that KFCB and Dr. Mutua had no rights to so, this screening was an illegal act and a copyright infringement,” read part of their statement. Hamburg Media School further stated that Dr. Mutua who went to Hollywood during the Oscars did not attend the event nor participate in any way. According to their tweets, Dr. Mutua was not even invited contrary to his social media posts. Dr. Mutua in Las Vegas on March 8This revelation by the school set Twitter on fire as many Kenyans questioned the real motive behind Dr.Mutua’s tweets about Watu Wote and Oscars in general. Many condemned him reminding him of the strictness he depicts when handling infringement and copyright matters.
