Well-wishers have come to the aid of pupils who have been learning under trees in Khwisero sub-county.

Some of the pupils have been taking their classes inside churches. At Elukanji Primary School, the Khwisero CDF committee promised to give the school Sh1.4 million to construct classrooms. Also, Hasira Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, has pledged to put up four classrooms.

The school's headteacher, Mr Daniel Ojowi, said the number of pupils had increased because of improved academic performance.

"After our plight was highlighted, we have received Sh828,996 from the CDF to start the construction. Hasira Foundation has promised to construct four classrooms and ACK Bishop Michael Sande has said he will talk to more organisations to help us put up more classrooms."

He added: "The population has been increasing every year but the problem is lack of classrooms. The few we have are congested. Standard Three and Four pupils have been learning under trees since last year."

The school, which has been in operation since 1953, has 1,283 pupils.
