Man returns home after a year and kills his elderly father

By Jackline Inyanji | January 6th 2017

A 37-year-old man who disappeared from home one year ago resurfaced over Christmas and went on to brutally kill his father.

He also brutally attacked six of his relatives in the Wednesday night incident.

Raphael Shilosia disappeared from Shisembe village, Shinyalu Sub-county an year ago, before reappearing during the Christmas and new year festivities.

To anyone who bothered to ask, he said he worked in Mombasa, as to what kind of job, nobody in the village seemed to know.

Then on Wednesday night, the he quietly unleashed a night of terror in the sleepy village that left one person dead and six injured.

His first target was his own father, who he hacked to death with a machete.

He then turned the bloody weapon on any relative in sight, including his mother, grandmother and his uncle, before surrendering to the police.

Six of his relatives are lying at the Kakamega County Referral Hospital, one in critical condition.

According a neighbour who was among the victims of the vicious attack, Shilosia stormed into his homestead brandishing a machete, and immediately descended on his mother.

“I was with visitors, he hit my mother with a panga and then turned on me. The visitors fled,” he said.

Other relatives narrated how the assailant quietly approached them before brutally attacking them.

Fred Bukoko Chikati, 41, said he was standing outside when he saw someone approach with a panga.

“When I turned to see who it was, I was hit with a panga on the head and fell. After sometime I regained strength and went to wake up my mother. While she was opening the door the suspect ambushed her and slashed her several times,” said Chikati.

Villagers said the assailant came back home on New Years Day after being away for almost a year.

“He says he works in Mombasa but we have never known what kind of job he does,” said Chikati.

Some of the assailants victims are still puzzled by what provoked the attack, and the anger with which it was unleashed.

Peninah Mukhwana recalled the assailant came knocking just after the family had their dinner, and without speaking a word to anyone started slashing at her with his machete.

“My husband tried to snatch the panga from him but he did not succeed. He was very angry and continued hitting us,” she said.

Shisembe sub-chief peter Mulama Liyengwa is still puzzled by the Wednesday night attack.

“We are yet to know what drove him to commit the crime,” he said.

Kakamega East deputy county commissioner Dorcas Rono is equally puzzled.

“The suspect surrendered and is currently in custody at Shinyalu police station,” Rono said.
