I will not resign over killings, says Nkaissery

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery has said he will not resign over extra-judicial killings.

Speaking in Kajiado County yesterday, the CS said the killing of human rights lawyer, his client and taxi driver had been politicised.

Mr Nkaissery said the police officers suspected to have killed the three were in custody and that Kenyans should exercise patience as State agencies ensure justice prevails.

"People are saying I should resign for being silent over the Mavoko killings. I will not resign," said the retired military general.

Mr Nkaissery said extra-judicial killings among security enforcers was unfortunate but leaders should not politicise the matter.

"As the CS, I cannot keep an eye on the movement of every police officer, and calling on me to resign because an officer has misused a firearm is uncalled-for. I ought to ensure that action is instead taken against any undisciplined officer," he said.

He added: "Some leaders are opportunists, and they use such moments to incite Kenyans. Be warned, your days are numbered."

Nkaissery said only President Kenya and his deputy William Ruto can ask him to resign because they are the ones who appointed him to the Cabinet.

There have been calls for the CS and the police leadership to resign over extra-judicial killings.
