Stop lying about ICC, Martha Karua tells President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP William Ruto

Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua

NAIROBI: Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua has slammed the ruling Jubilee coalition for allegedly polarising the country. She accused Jubilee leaders of peddling lies on the recent ruling by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Ms Karua, a former Justice Minister in the Grand Coalition government, said it is wrong for President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto to say the ICC case is a national matter. “The two leaders are busy moving round the country celebrating the recent dismissal by ICC of the case involving Ruto and journalist Joshua Sang yet victims of the case that took then to The Hague are in the cold,” Karua said.

Speaking during her party’s national delegates’ convention at the party’s headquarters in Nairobi, Karua called on Jubilee to show the same zeal that they exhibited when defending those accused at The Hague in resettling the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

Government interference

“State resources were used to secure freedom of The Hague accused. Now that they are free, let us see the same resources being used to compensate victims of the post-election violence,” Karua said.

She supported CORD leader Raila Odinga’s assertion that ICC let Kenyans down and set a bad precedent for other African leaders who might commit crimes in future. “Raila is right. He is talking about impunity. When Government interferes with an international process, then as a nation we are doomed. What we need is to strengthen our judicial system to be able to deal with issues internally,” she said.

The party elected new national office bearers where Karua retained the chairmanship.
