Inmate feigns 'call of nature' to escape prison

A prisoner at Wundanyi GK Prison made a surprise escape in unclear circumstances that have left the authorities baffled.

Police and prison authorities interviewed said the prisoner, who was serving a two-year jail term for theft, easily escaped as he worked at a prison farm in the outskirts of Wundanyi town.

It is alleged that the suspect, whom police identified as William Ochieng Odhiambo, tricked the officers that he was going to relief himself only to disappear in the bush.

Authorities said the suspect had also given wrong particulars about his identity and county of origin, making it difficult to trace his whereabouts.

This is baffling given that the prisoner had been processed through the court and police systems before being jailed. Critics are wondering why his true identity cannot be ascertained.

County Prisons Commander Nicholas Maswai said action will be taken against the prison officers who escorted the runaway inmate to the farm.

“There was definitely negligence on the part of the warders who escorted the prisoner to the farm. We are still investigating the matter and stern action will be taken against those who were guarding him at the time of his disappearance,” he warned.
