Government raises alarm over Mombasa Republican Council

The Government has claimed that the secessionist group, Mombasa Republican Council (MRC), is re-emerging.

With the claim came six names of men believed to be recruiting members to the movement.

But the movement has disowned the list and accused the Government of inventing the claims to justify a new crackdown on local residents.

On Friday, County Commissioner Douglas Kanja said the group whose top leaders are facing many court cases in Mombasa and Kwale was re-organising itself and planning to recruit new members.

Mr Kanja said police were in pursuit of six people believed to be involved in the recruitment of members in Kaya Chonyi Forest.

"We have information that the MRC is cropping up. In fact, we are aware of six people involved in the recruitment,"he said.

The county commissioner explained that security operatives in the county were after the suspects in order to disrupt the movement's activities.

"This July, the six leaders were planning to meet at Kaya Chonyi Forest where their intention was to administer an oath to new members. Police have information that after the oath taking, they were to raid the Kaloleni AP camp and Banda la Salama administration police camp," he added.

He urged the suspected leaders to go to the nearest police station in the next seven days to clear their names.

"We have hard evidence that the six were ring leaders and were planning a comeback to disrupt the peace in the country," he added.

He said the six are from Kilifi and Kwale counties. Despite the police reports, MRC Secretary General Hamza Randu dismissed the allegations terming them as hearsay.

Mr Randu said the six could just be robbers, adding that the secessionist group was aware of all the activities of its members.

"How can the entire county police force fail to nab these robbers, they are just thugs and have no links with our group," explained Randu.

He accused the police of malice and wondered why the said six individuals had not been apprehended.

"I don't understand why the Government has failed to nab the suspects. I know it has all the machinery and if they were serious, they could have arrested them long ago," he said.

He said MRC leadership has been advising its members against rogue activities.
