IG Boinnet: Al Shabaab plan to disrupt the Holy Month of Ramadhan

The Government Saturday issued a security alert warning that terrorist group Al Shabaab is planning to disrupt the Holy Month of Ramadhan by attacking innocent Kenyans.

Inspector General (IG) Joseph Boinnet said the attacks would in particular target key Government installations, security personnel, journalists who report negatively about the activities of the group, learning institutions, churches, markets and shopping malls.

“Consequently, security agencies have in response, enhance alertness across the country and carrying out security operations to ensure evil plans by these desperate criminals do not succeed,” he stated.

Extra alertness

Boinnet called on members of the public to equally exercise extra alertness in their day to day activities.

The warning by the Government comes barely two and a half months after terrorists attacked Garissa University College and killed 148 people.

The Government came under intense criticism following the attack for allegedly ignoring intelligence reports. Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaisserry admitted that security officers ignored intelligence reports prior to the attack. Nkaisserry also admitted that the response was poorly co-ordinated.

Seven top policemen were suspended following an initial inquiry into the security failings. Yesterday, Boinnet assured that the Government is not taking any chances with the latest intelligence reports.

He assured all Kenyans as well as visitors that every effort is being made to provide security for all. “As we look forward to the commencement of the Holy Month of Ramadhan, I want to assure all Muslim brothers and sisters they will be able to observe their religious obligations unhindered,” he stated.

Negative elements

In a few days, Muslims all over the world will be observing their fast after the sighting of new crescent that will effectively mark the commencement of the Holy Month of Ramadhan.

Speaking at a press conference at his Nairobi office yesterday, the IG said his officers are looking forward to working with everyone to ensure negative elements are exposed to face the law.

“I am once again calling upon Kenyans to continue making use of the police toll-free lines 999 and 112 to convey information of security nature for necessary action,” he said.

Boinnet further said members of the public should not hesitate to make reports or give information at the nearest police station or any other nearest Government facility.

“Owners of various social and public establishments including public service vehicles, should also ensure that they put in place necessary security measures to guarantee the safety and security of their clients,” he added.

National Police Service spokesman George Kinoti, and the Administration Police spokesman Masoud Mwinyi were present during the press conference.
