Moi says Grace Ogot worked hard to change society

Former President Daniel arap Moi has sent a message of condolence to the family and friends of the late literary icon and former Gem MP Grace Emily Akinyi Ogot who died on Wednesday.

Moi described Ogot as a consummate nurse, author, broadcaster and politician who worked tirelessly to bring change in the society.

"It is sad to lose such an inspiring woman who fought to positively change the society. Her first name befitted her well as she carried herself with admirable grace, dignity and humility," said the former president. He said Ogot had rendered valuable contribution to the nursing profession in Kenya, Uganda and Britain besides being the first black Kenyan to have her work published.

"There are more women in the country who have failed to climb the ladder due to their gender that makes them feel inferior but Ogot stood upright with an 'eagle's eye' despite all odds to reach her dream. Such achievement normally puffs up the ego of ordinary mortals," he said.

The former president further acknowledged the late as a self-effacing but resolute in belief and purpose.

"She was self-driven and dedicated in executing her roles while serving in my government. She was also patient but deep and reflective in her way of handling different issues," Moi said.

Ogot stood out as an iron lady in the country in when few female names featured in Kenyan politics, she was nominated as MP by Moi.
