Nairobi, Kenya: The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) says it had on Thursday destroyed a camp in Somalia where the Westgate attackers trained.

A statement from KDFs Information Officer Col. Cyrus Oguna said the forces conducted a major aerial offensive on Al Shabaab location in the Dinsoor region of Somalia.

“The airstrike completely destroyed an Al Shabaab training camp at Hurguun. Initial reports from the ground confirmed that 4 technical vehicles and a weapons’ store were destroyed,” read the statement.

Oguna added that at the time of the airstrike, the camp had over 300 recruits, many of whom were believed to have perished, with many others suffering injuries.

According to KDF the training camp had been used by Al Shabaab to train operatives some of whom eventually infiltrated into Kenya.

“The Westgate attackers received their training from this camp.” Said Oguna.

The offensive is a continuation of an earlier attack in which an Al Shabaab Commander Abdullahi Ali alias Ante Ante and Abdi Fatah were said to have been killed.

The military has asserted that operations of that nature will be sustained into the future, and that they form part of a broader AMISOM effort in stabilising Somalia.

Meanwhile, KDF forces in the southern part of Somalia were part of a team of soldiers that received Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to Kismayu town Thursday afternoon.
