Kenya: Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Felix Koskei has said his ministry will work hard to boost food security.

Mr Koskei noted a functioning agriculture industry will effectively provide food, generate income, employment opportunities and increase export earnings.

He said the Government will put Galana/Kulalu ranch that occupies 1.75 million acres under irrigation to increase yields and spur economic development. In budget estimates, Sh17 billion has been set aside for irrigation projects.

Drainage

Galana/Kulalu ranch has been sub-divided into different areas. Some 500,000 acres will be used to grow maize, 300,000 acres sugarcane, 200,000 acres acres for beef and game animals and 150,000 acres for horticultural produce.

On the other hand, 50,000 acres will be used for growing fruits and another 100,000 acres for dairy production.  It has been established that though the country possesses great irrigation and drainage potential estimated at 3 million acres, only 450,000 acres is utilised.

Most food insecure households are situated in North Eastern area.
