A public university has been stopped from suspending two of its student leaders for leading a protest.

Justice Anthony Ombwayo issued a temporary order stopping the Dedan Kimathi University of Science and Technology from suspending John Kunyihia Njoro and James Maina Irungu pending the filing of a case challenging their suspension for leading a protest five months ago.

After listening to an application by lawyer Muhoho Gichimu for the two students, Justice Ombwayo of Nyeri said he was satisfied the students had a case with a good chance of success.

“I agree that you should at least have been given a chance to give your side noting that this action is based on events that happened a long time ago,” said the judge.

He granted them 21 days to file a judicial review challenging the decision to suspend them pending disciplinary action in a yet to be disclosed date.

The two students are chairman and secretary general of the university’s students organisation
