Kibaki pledges to support police

Nairobi,Kenya-President Kibaki has assured the National Police Service Commission that the Government will give all the support required to tackle the emerging security challenges.

Speaking today during his first meeting with members of the National Police Service Commission at his Harambee House office, President Kibaki said the National Police Service should be sensitive to the needs of Kenyans.

Chairman Johnstone Kavuludi and the newly appointed National Police Service Inspector General David Kimaiyo led the members of the National Police Service Commission.

The Head of State called on the police service to strive and maintain peace and create an enabling environment for the country’s social-economic development even as Kenyans prepare for the coming elections.

“We must send a clear message to criminals that we will deal with them firmly and decisively. The Kenyan people want to see action taken and we must reassure them by the steps we take,” President Kibaki said.

The President added: “Security is an important component in the achievement of our national development goals as outlined in our Vision 2030 road map. We should, therefore, strive to ensure that our development aspirations are not undermined by security threats.”

On his part, Internal Security Minister Katoo ole Metito lauded the appointment of the Inspector General, terming it a major milestone in the implementation of police reforms.

Metito expressed confidence that the Inspector General will enhance command and control of the National Police Service and provide effective leadership.

“The police need leadership that can embrace reforms and ensure policing is done in partnership with the community and with utmost respect for human rights and the rule of law,” Metito said.

Mr Kimaiyo briefed President Kibaki on the security situation in the country and indicated the measures put in place to tackle terrorism, criminal gangs, the ongoing conflict in Tana Delta and Baragoi.

He also outlined the steps taken by the police service to ensure security during the coming General Election.
