MRC members await doctor’s report before plea

By Willis Oketch

Nairobi, Kenya: Seven suspected members of the Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) charged with murder could not plead  to the offence because the doctor’s report on their mental status is not ready.

The suspects are accused of killing Administration Police officer Dishon Nduli in Kwale on September 14.

The report would determine if they are mentally fit to stand trial for the murder committed in Tiribe.

Yesterday, Justice Martin Muya ordered the accused to be remanded at Shimo la Tewa Prison following an application by State Prosecutor Gioche Kibui.

“The doctor has seen them but the report is not ready to enable them plead to the offence,” said Kibui.

Justice Muya ordered the accused to return to court on Monday when  the prosecution will produce the report.

The suspects have denied the charges. The court heard that the group was spotted by the officer while training in the forest but when confronted, they attacked and killed him.

APs at a nearby camp later arrested the suspects, who were armed.

The group is part of suspected MRC members who have already been arrested with various offences in Kwale, which include incitement and being members of an illegal society.

Others include MRC chairman Omar Mwamnwadzi, secretary general Hamza Randu and spokesman Omar Rashid Mraja all facing charges before a Mombasa court.
