Three men were shot dead and another one seriously injured when gangsters opened fire on their car in Changamwe, Mombasa, last night.

The driver, identified as James Mwangi, died on the spot, but the other two occupants died yesterday morning in hospital.

Changamwe police boss David Mathews confirmed the incident, saying the motive of the attack is still unknown and investigations have been launched.

"We established that the driver, James Mwangi, was the owner of the car. He died on the spot while the other two victims died in hospital. A fourth occupant of the vehicle is in a critical condition," said the police boss.

He said two vehicles were being driven from Mombasa towards Changamwe when the vehicle that was behind, overtook the one in front and blocked its way. A gang emerged and started shooting indiscriminately at the other car.

Police recovered five mobile phones, several ATM cards and a car key from the scene.

The five-man gang was in a Toyota Auris, according to police source.
