Parents blamed for poor performance

Coast, Kenya: Educationists and political leaders at the Coast have blamed parents and abuse of drugs for the decline in school performance in the region.

The leaders claimed most parents ignore their children after paying fees and do not monitor their progress.

"Most parents once they pay the school fees that is it. They don't even want to take part in school activities. They don't want to even join committees in schools," said Changamwe MP Omar Mwinyi.

The leaders who converged at the Fort Jesus museum for the launch of UMMA University in Mombasa said parents had left matters concerning education to teachers.
