Kakamega, Kenya: The British Council in collaboration with the Government and other partners has commenced a multi-million pilot project on digital education of primary schools in Matete District, Kakamega County.

The ambitious project has identified six primary schools in the district which will benefit from free laptops and training to instructors, with about 3,800 pupils expected to reap from the initiative.

About 13 teachers from the schools were taken through a one-week rigorous training on computer basics to enable them take up the programme once fully operationalised.

The schools include Maturu, Chenjeni, Nzoia, Lwandeti and Vuyika primary schools.

British Council Acting Country Director Hugh Moffat said this was part of the council’s educational programs across sub-Saharan Africa and would supplement the Kenyan government’s initiative to introduce digital education to class one pupils.

“We are behind the Kenyan Government’s plans to initiate digital education to class one pupils in schools across the country, this is a positive direction taken and we want to support these efforts,” stated Moffat.

He said several schools in the United Kingdom were already working closely with local schools.
