State mulls fresh charges against Dor

By Willis Oketch

The State is planning to prefer fresh charges against Nominated MP Sheikh Mohamed Dor, who is facing incitement charges in a Mombasa court.

State counsel Alex Muteti told Mombasa Chief Magistrate Stephen Riech that the police are preparing fresh charges against the MP.

Mr Muteti told the court on Tuesday that although the State was ready for the hearing of the first case, the prosecution was planning to come up with other charges before the hearing of the matter that was mentioned on Tuesday at the Mombasa Law Courts.

“The State is planning to bring fresh charges against the accused,” Muteti said.

Muteti did not elaborate on the nature of the new charges but there are indications that the current incitement charge against the MP could also be reframed to strengthen it.

Concerns

On Tuesday, the magistrate fixed the hearing date for November 29 after he allowed the prosecution’s application to have the hearing adjourned.

Dor’s lawyer Stephen Mwenesi applied for adjournment saying the defence had not gone through the statements he was given on Tuesday.

“I wish to apply for adjournment because I have not gone through the statements the prosecution has given me,” said Mwenesi. Muteti did not object the application.

Dor, who is identified as Dory Muhamed Yakue, is charged with crimes associated with Mombasa Republican Council.

Dor, who was escorted to the court by his followers, has denied ever supporting MRC’s secession agenda. He is the first politician to be charged with incitement over the MRC.

Meanwhile, detectives have arrested a suspected member of MRC. The police pounced on the suspect outside the Mombasa Law Courts.

The man, who was bundled into awaiting police van, was driven to Provincial Police headquaters.
