Woman in court for having plastic carrier bags

Nancy Wangari Roberts, a small-scale trader at Mudavadi market, appeared before Nyeri Resident Magistrate Ruth Kefa for contravening the law on plastic ban which took effect on August 28. On November 6 at Mudavadi market along Gakere road, being the owner a retail shop, Cocorico Polythene centre, the accused was found in possession of 17 flat and carrier bags, according to the charge sheet.

Through her lawyer Charles Karweru, Ms Wangari applied to be released on reasonable bond term or cash bail.

She further asked to be supplied with copies of charge sheet, statements and any other documents the prosecution intends to rely on. She was released on Sh2 million bond.

Wangari's brother Evanson Kinyanjui stood surety for her by depositing a title deed for a 0.54 acre piece of land namely valued at Sh8.1 million.

He stated that he was aware his land can be sold or alternatively put in custody if the accused absconded trial.

The magistrate directed Kinyanjui to deposit the tittle, a valuation report and a copy of his identity card with the court.

The case will be mentioned on November 15.

A gazette notice issued by the Government banned the use, manufacture and importation of all plastic bags.
