Kenya: Residents of Nyeri and Kirinyaga counties got a treat from the Standard Group over the weekend during the company’s meet the people tour.

A road show popularising the group’s brands; The Standard, KTN and Radio Maisha, thrilled locals, with fans being rewarded.

The caravan snaked through villages and estates granting residents a rare chance to meet news gatherers and presenters.

They lined up along the murram tracks and tarmacked highways to have the rare encounter.

Word went round that renowned TV journalist Jeff Koinange was in the caravan, causing a mad rush to Nyeri town centre way before the caravan arrived.

It was a near emotional moment when Jeff was called out to greet the people, which he did in his unique and captivating way.

In his deep commanding voice, Jeff made his presence known from behind the track, with his trademark ‘My, oh my!’

Cheers and screams

Cheers and screams from the elated crowd nearly drowned the amplified voice emanating from the speakers when he finally emerged.

Jeff stunned the crowd even further when he proved that he could speak better and fluent Kikuyu than the Queen’s English.

Radio Maisha presenters Emmanuel Mwashumbe of the famous Rumba Attention show and Mshamba, who is a co-host of the Maisha Drive, stimulated the excited atmosphere even further.

Locals got free merchandise including T-shirts and caps.

In Nyeri, the town momentarily became a dance floor when renowned Kikuyu gospel musician Ben Githae took to the floor with his award winning Mabataro song.

Stunned crowd

More entertainment flowed Saturday evening, as fans flocked the White Rhino Hotel in Nyeri town for the Rhumba Night event sponsored by Radio Maisha.

Jeff stunned the crowd even further when he strolled in clad not in a suit and a tie that he is often seen in, but a simple pair of jeans and a T-shirt ready to shake a leg with other revellers.

“This is proof that the Standard Group is indeed the media house for the ordinary Kenyans. I can’t believe I shook the hand of Jeff Koinange today,” said an elated fan.

In Kirinyaga, the caravan made its way through Kagumo, Kerugoya town, Kutus, Kagio and later Sagana.

After touring Nyeri and Kirinyaga, the caravan proceeds to Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Meru counties.
