Resign or be fired: Lusaka warns civil servants in politics as he reshuffles cabinet

Governor Kenneth Lusaka addressing the media at County headquarters.[Bernard Lusigi/Standard] Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has issued a one-week ultimatum to public officers engaging in premature political campaigns to resign and pursue their political ambitions or face the axe. Addressing the media at the county headquarters, Lusaka said early campaigns by public workers undermine service delivery, urging those interested in politics to either quit in one week or focus fully on serving the people. "We have given you public jobs to serve wananchi, not to spend time politicking and campaigning for yourselves or others at the expense of serving the locals who gave us a mandate to work for them and uplift their living standards and not for your own good," said Lusaka. He stressed that early campaigns were a major setback to effective service delivery and vowed not to hesitate in sacking any officer found flouting the directive. "I will not hesitate to sack anyone found going against the directive of engaging in early politics. We want to focus on service delivery, working for the people and implementing the manifestos we sold to our people for the remaining period in the office so that we can change people's lives," said Lusaka. At the same time, the governor announced a reorganisation of his cabinet aimed at boosting efficiency in service delivery. In the reshuffle, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Lands and Urban Planning, Douglas Sasita, was moved to the Department of Trade, Energy, and Industrialisation. Dr. Monicah Fedha, who previously held the Trade and Energy docket, takes over Lands, Urban and Physical Planning. Chief Officer for Education and Vocational Training, Sam Nalwa, was transferred to Lands and Urban Planning, while George Kombo, formerly Chief Officer for Lands and Physical Planning, moves to head the Education docket. Lusaka said the shake-up was part of his administration's broader strategy to realign roles and strengthen service delivery across departments. "This reshuffle solely focuses on effective service delivery. We have a lot in the tray to execute, and I want to urge those who have been bestowed with responsibilities in ensuring we deliver on our pledges to work diligently and help me in delivering to our people without fail," said Lusaka. The Ford-Kenya governor is serving his second and last term in office before exiting in 2027, throwing the county and politicians into plans and preparations to occupy the office ahead of the general polls. The seat has already attracted bigwigs within and outside the county to succeed, with Kimilili MP Didmas Barasa, Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, former Bungoma governor Wycliffee Wangamati and businessman Zachariah Barasa having declared interest to succeed Lusaka.
