Boost for Kakamega rural schools over Sh20m sponsorship deal

[Benard Lusigi, Standard] At least six public schools in rural areas across Kakamega County have benefited from a Sh20 million sponsorship to upgrade their infrastructural development amid a cash crunch occasioned by delayed disbursement of capitation by the National Government. The Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) Foundation is undertaking the project at Shivakala Junior and Primary School in Ikolomani Constituency and Bukhaywa Secondary School in Shinyalu Consistency. At Shivakala Primary School where Director of Public Prosecution Renson Ingonga is an Alumni and graced the occasion, the foundation handed over two classrooms worth Sh4 million fully equipped with desks, seats, and whiteboards. The modern classes will host at least 200 students out of the growing population of 800 students in the entire school. According to KPC Foundation Manager Rachael Gathoni, their intervention came when the school sought help due to the high population of learners and overcrowding of students in small and old classes, which poses a danger to their safety. "At Shivakala Primary School, the institution made an application that it is grappling with an ever-growing population of learners with few classrooms, a situation that had led to overcrowding of learners, making it difficult for them to get quality education and under a safe environment and as a foundation we came in and catered for everything," said Gathoni. Gathoni said that the foundation has invested at least Sh20 million and that they intend to scale up our programs across the country's health and education sectors. "We are looking to scale up our programs and the scale-up will be more of a partnership model, where we work with partners in the same areas to combine our resources and expertise to offer more solutions to the community," said Gathoni. Gathoni acknowledged a high number of applications from various schools across the country, urging the learning institutions to apply for sponsorship. Ambassador Aggrey Shitsama, the Patron and alumni of Shivakala Primary School urged all stakeholders to join hands and give back to society especially in the education sector to ensure the smooth and successful of the Competence-Based-Curriculum CBC. "We want to thank KPC in collaboration with our DPP who is also an alumnus for ensuring that out of the shortage of six classrooms, we have solved it by constructing two classrooms so that our learners can have a conducive and safe environment for their learning and due to shrinking of land we request KPC to start constructing a storey building to utilize on the limited space the school has," said Shitsama. He added, "We need to support CBC because it is here to stay and one way of supporting it is by having more classrooms." The KPC foundation also handed over a Sh5 million girls' dormitory at Bukhaywa Secondary School that will host at least 200 students. Mrs Gathoni said the foundation put into consideration the safety measures as directed by the Ministry of Education to avert any future crisis. "We have been witnessing fire outbreaks and stampedes and you find some school buildings are not safe for our children due to such emergencies but as a foundation, we ensured that we built the dormitory with all safety measures in place like the exit and entry door, aeration space, the opening of windows and doors so that our children can be safe while in school," said Gathoni. Bukhaywa Secondary School Principal Michael Amukoa who is also Chairman of the Kakamega Principals Association welcomed the move, stating that such a partnership helps schools to address some challenges amid the cash crunch occasioned by delay in the release of capitation funds by the national government.
