Huge fire consumes NGO office in Kakamega

Residents of Amalemba in Kakamega town woke up to a rude shock after an office belonging to a Non-Governmental Organization went up in flames in the area.

The fire razed the private organisation's office, record files, foodstuff meant for vulnerable families and other equipment today morning.

The cause of the fire could not be immediately established with residents wondering how a specific office would burn down amongst many other buildings.

According to Victor Amanya, the security officer on duty, the fire started with smoke at around 2am forcing him to raise an alarm.

“I noticed smoke coming from the offices, later it developed into a fire which forced me to seek assistance from our neighbors. I called out for help but only few came out as a result of the ongoing national curfew,” Amanya told The Standard.

Frantic efforts by Amanya and some residents to put out the fire to secure the food supplies, files, and other items hit a brick wall.

"We were forced to call in firefighters who arrived at the scene late after the fire had spread and consumed everything."

Dr Alfred Madoya, in charge of the NGO’s operations, indicated they had lost property worth millions of shillings.

Police have launched investigations into the incident to establish the cause of the fire.
