Kenyans mourn death of Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore

Kenyans on social media are mourning the death of Safaricom Chief Executive Officer Bob Collymore. Collymore died at the age of 61 on Monday 1 July at his home in Nairobi after a long battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). He has left behind one wife and four children. Safaricom released a statement confirming his death.“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing away of Robert (Bob) William Collymore CEO if SAFARICOM. PLC, which occurred at his home in the morning of 1st July 2019,”read part of the statement. During an interview in August 2018, Bob Collymore opened up on his journey battling with cancer. “I went to London and they told me I had acute myeloid leukaemia- a rare kind of blood cancer that is curable. I was diagnosed with cancer. The doctors told me at the time that I had probably had it for about 6 months he revealed,” said Bob Collymore.‘If I were not CEO at Safaricom, if I worked at the call centre for instance, I would get the same medical access. I have 6 colleagues currently undergoing cancer treatment,” he added. President Uhuru Kenyatta also released a statement mourning the death of the Safaricom boss citing that we have ‘lost a distinguished corporate leader whose contribution to our national wellbeing will be missed.’"It is with deep sadness that I have this morning recieved news of the death of Safaricom CEO Mr Bob Collymore after years of battling cancer.
