LG helping everyone participate fully in society through technology

As we reflect on the importance of reaching out to those living with disabilities, it is important to remember that technology can play a vital role in helping everyone participate fully in society.

Often an overlooked population, and ill-served by today’s most dynamic technology is the group of people living with disability. This could have been what informed the theme for this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). The day is observed every December 3rd to raise awareness around the crucial issues faced by those with disabilities.

The theme for IDFD 2017 is “Transformation towards sustainable and resilient society for all”. The goal of this theme is to link increased disability awareness with the transformative changes outlined by the UN’s 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development.

The UN believes that by uniting sustainable development with disability initiatives, lasting impact can be achieved by expanding their opportunities. This would result in a better world for all of us.

For people living with disability, new technology can be life changing. LG Electronics appreciates this fact and hence the reason for going out of its way to harness innovation and design products that are not just targeted at able-bodied men but also those living with disabilities.

“For the roughly one billion people worldwide living with a disability, interacting with everyday products can be both alienating and frustrating,” said Maureen Kemunto, Assistant Manager Marketing and Corporate Communications.

Even though approximately 19.4 percent of the world’s population is estimated to live with some form of disability, only 2.2 percent of those afflicted with handicaps are unable to lead independent, productive lives.

She added: “Everything from appliances to computers has been designed with able-bodied users in mind, presenting difficulties for those with physical disabilities. However, LG Electronics’ recent innovations are demonstrating that inclusivity-oriented technology can also provide enhanced usability for people living with disability as well.”

LG Electronics demonstrates its commitment to both innovation and inclusion with the LG signature lineup.

The refrigerator’s Auto Open Door™ feature comes with a smart sensor detector that opens the door automatically. Simply stepping on the “Door Open” light projection on the floor in front of the refrigerator will swing the door gently open – perfect for those who may not have the strength or ability to open the refrigerator themselves.

In addition, the LG SIGNATURE washing machine sports angled panels to allow for easier control without forcing users to stoop down. These features and others like them enhance convenience for able-bodied users but also provide a lifeline to those with disabilities or motor skill issues.
