Mukami Kimathi gets emotional during peace prayers.

An alliance of MAUMAU freedom fighters have asked the country to maintain peace and unity during and after August 8 poll.

The alliance held peace prayers on Tuesday at the Kabiruini stadium, Nyeri.

The 12 veterans had been camping and fasting at the Aberdare forest for four days in readiness for the prayers.

During the prayers that were attended by people from over 10 counties, the late Dedan Kimathi’s wife, Mukami wa Kimathi broke down to tears when she was asked to talk to the attendees.

General Duncan Mwangi Kariuki, who is the MAUMAU leader said that, that was an important day as it was ordained by God.

“We are here to pray for a peaceful election ahead of the August 8 poll,” he said.

Mr Kariuki added that they were also praying for President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto to come out victorious in the forthcoming election.

Another freedom fighter General Joseph Macharia Mwangi sighted that although they (freedom fighters) live in deplorable conditions, they support the government fully.

He also asked the opposition to cease insulting the president and wait for their time.

“We fought for the overall country, despite our tribes,” Macharia said.

The veterans said that they don’t wish to witness a repeat of the 2007 post-election violence which lead loss of lives.
