Uasin Gishu county finally gets full cabinet after long wait

By Michael Wesonga

Eldoret, Kenya: The Uasin Gishu county assembly has approved the names of the remaining four members to the County Executive Committee, four months after the initial list was rejected.

Members of the assembly had rejected the list for failing to meet ethnic and gender balance, arguing that majority of the members were from the pre-dominant community in the county.

Leader of the Minority Ramadhan Mirambo Ali and his counterpart Francis Muya in June asked the governor to submit fresh names for vetting. They are Shadrack Kapkia Sambai (Finance and Economic Planning), Dr Eunice Jepkoech Sirian-(Health Services), Dr Cyril Ambrose Cheruiyot (Agriculture and Livestock Development and Fisheries).

Speaker of the assembly Isaac Kipkemei Terer said Mary Wanjiku Njogu’s name, for Environment, Energy, Water and Natural Resources, was re-submitted and found compliant.

“Her name had principally been rejected on compliance issues. Members argued she had not applied and was not interviewed for the position but she presented overwhelming evidence of application and the interview,” he explained.

Mr Terer said Ben Kipng’etich Samoei had been approved as secretary to the county public service board.

“This brings the total number of executive committee members to ten, comprising seven men and three women,” he explained.

The Speaker noted that the House had also moved a motion to confirm and appoint Richard Toroitich Chepkonga as the substantive county assembly clerk after being seconded by the Transition Authority.

“The Assembly also received Peter Lelei’s name for the position of Uasin Gishu County Secretary and has already advertised his vetting on October 16.”
