Seleman Bungara: Veteran Tanzanian politician behind “Uliskia wapi” meme dies

Former Tanzanian Member of Parliament Seleman Bungara, popularly known as Bwege and widely recognised for his viral phrase “Uliskia wapi,” has died.

Bungara passed away on Monday in Dar es Salaam while receiving treatment at EM Hospital in Mji Mwema, according to his brother, Nasri Omari.

He rose to widespread fame beyond politics in 2020, after a press conference in which he dismissed claims that he had defected to the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).

In a sharp, animated response to journalists, he asked, “Uliskia wapi?”, loosely translated as “Where did you hear that?”

The phrase quickly went viral, especially in Kenya, where social media users adapted it into “Olisikia wapi,” turning it into a popular meme and even printing it on merchandise.

Bungara served as MP for Kilwa South from 2005, winning multiple terms under the Civic United Front (CUF) before later joining the Alliance for Change and Transparency (ACT Wazalendo).

He lost his parliamentary seat in the October 2020 general election.

Known for his outspoken nature, Bungara built a reputation as a vocal legislator who confronted issues head-on.

He also served on several parliamentary committees, including Agriculture, Livestock and Water (2010–2013), HIV and AIDS Affairs (2013–2015), and Social Development and Services.

Beyond politics, Bwege became a symbol of integrity and patriotism, remembered for his sharp wit and the iconic phrase “Uliskia wapi.”

His family paid heartfelt tribute, saying, “We thank God for your life. It is encouraging that you left this world having preserved your status and honor. Thank you for your service, which was full of humanity and true patriotism.”
