Ongwae, Ongeri form alliance ahead of 2017 elections

Former Cabinet minister Sam Ongeri and Kisii Governor James Ongwae appear to be headed for an alliance ahead of next year's elections.

Prof Ongeri who is also Kenya's ambassador to the UN Habitat met Ongwae in Nairobi on Monday when they are said to have discussed a wide range of issues, including the elections.

The two, it appears, are planning to counter the recently formed Gusii Unity Talks group spearheaded by Senator Chris Obure and Deputy Governor Joash Maangi.

Those who attended the meeting at a Nairobi hotel, including Senator Janet Ongera and People Democratic Party chairman Omingo Magara, are said to have dismissed the Obure-Maangi group. Several political aspirants and professionals from Kisii also attended the meeting.

Ongeri was appointed the chairman of the group while Lukas Mogoa will be the secretary. Magara will serve as the group's coordinator.

Mogoa said they did not meet to endorse anyone for any political office. "We have met as Kisii leaders irrespective of our political party affiliations to discuss issues affecting us," said Mogoa.

"Those leaders talking about Gusii Unity are misleading us and they should apologise to the community," said Mogoa. He said they will invite more leaders to their future meetings.
