A Form Three student has been shot in the head with a rubber bullet as protests turned violent in Homa Bay County on Thursday, March 30.

The Oriwo Boys High School student admitted to the Homa Bay County Referral Hospital was shot at Shauri Yako estate as police engaged protestors in running battles.

He had returned home to collect school fees when he met a group of protesters running away from the police. He got shot as he tried to escape to a safer place.

The protestors hurled stones at the police, who fired rubber bullets.

Witnesses said the student tried to run away after he was shot but collapsed.

Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital Chief Executive Officer Peter Ogola said the boy sustained injuries on the right side of the head.

"The boy sustained injuries because he was brought to the hospital while unconscious. We have hope that he will be stable," Ogola said.

Dr Ogola said medical officers were attending to the boy to ensure he regains stability.

"We have admitted him, and we hope he will be stable soon," Dr Ogola said.
