Officers engaging in illegal fishing warned

A fresh row has erupted in Bondo after residents and fishermen accused law enforcement officers of abetting illegal fishing.

Addressing a stakeholders meeting in Usenge, a Member of Siaya County Assembly representing East Yimbo Elisha Okuku said the law enforcers who are supposed to help in arresting culprits engaging in illegal fishing are the ones practicing it.

“We also have reports that fisheries officials, police officers and chiefs are extorting cash from fishermen,” said Mr Okuku.

He added that the use of illegal nets and poison to catch fish has resulted in the reduction of stock in the lake.

This comes barely a month after the Bondo Fisheries department announced the election of Beach Management Units officials.
