Peer pressure nearly claimed my life, says Eldoret Man United fan hospitalized after eating 15 eggs

What began as a joke almost ended tragically for a 27-year-old Manchester United die-hard in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County after a bet he had promised his fans went south. Thomas Kiptanui Kemboi, popularly known as Kapkeno, a secular artist, had promised his fans that he would consume a whole crate of boiled eggs should his team lose to Arsenal during the recently completed English Premier League. When the Arsenal team triumphed over the Red Devils during Sunday's match with a resounding 3-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium in London, Kapkeno, opted to pay his debt. He therefore ordered a crate of boiled eggs and began eating them one by one. While in the company of his friends and videographer, the artist famous for his hit song titled 'Wachawi' meaning 'witches' began a live session on his Facebook page. While his fans streamed the live to watch Kapkeno fulfil his promise, the artists began by peeling the eggshells one after the other while adding some salt and tomato sauce before eating them. He would take occasional breaks where he would drink water while engaging in the comment section with his fans telling them that he did not want to fail them. "Due to the loss of Manchester United to Arsenal, I (Kapkeno) am fulfilling my promise of eating one crate of eggs to my fans," Kapkeno wrote on his Facebook page which has a following of 21,000 people. When he got to the 15th egg, Kapkeno collapsed and fell down while the cameras were still rolling, his team, oblivious of what was happening. In the video, Kapkeno's friends are heard bursting out in laughter while calling him to complete his challenge "We thought that it was all part of the script. We were hopeful that he could consume all the eggs. We did not think that it was a serious matter and that he could end up admitted to hospital," said Victor Kimutai, Kapkeno's videographer. Kapkeno says that before passing out, he had experienced some fever, and excessive sweating and his stomach had begun to swell. "One minute I was energetic and ready to complete the challenge before me and the next moment, I was in the hospital with an IV drip on my hand. I was diagnosed with constipation and was injected with three IV fluids. I am grateful that I am now doing well," narrated Kapkeno, who we caught up with after being discharged from hospital. Peer pressure Kimutai said the youths should shun away from peer pressure that could lead them to incidents that could affect their health or claim their lives. Kapkeno says that nothing will stop him from supporting his favourite football team. He however stated that he has learned his lesson adding that he will never advise the youth to engage in betting activities that could risk their lives. "While I lay on the hospital bed after my friends told me what happened, I could not stop blaming myself. I felt that I deserved the pain I was going through and I was afraid that the same experience would have left me dead," recounted the artist while vowing never to eat eggs again. He said that his parents had been shocked to learn of the incident and wondered why he could have done such a thing to himself. The artist, who began his music career at a young age in 2012, said that peer pressure could have forced him into trying to please his fans. "I have witnessed other artists like comedian Meshack Kiprop alias Arap Uriah who went on a cycling expedition from Eldoret to Nairobi after his beloved Chelsea team lost to Manchester United earlier this year. I really did not think that it would end up like this," held Kapkeno. On May 25, Arap Uria had declared his plan to undertake the challenging 311-kilometre journey from Eldoret to Nairobi if Chelsea lost and true to his words, he successfully went on a four-day cycling journey to Parliament building in Nairobi where he was received by Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago. Arap Uria said that the youth should however involve themselves in manageable challenges that do not threaten their health or lives.
