The Director of Public Prosecutions, Noordin Haji, has directed Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to open investigations on allegations of child neglect and misappropriation of public funds at the Child Welfare Society of Kenya following an expose by the Sunday Standard.

The DPP’s order comes barely two days after the newspaper exposed child abuse, mistreatment, poor living conditions and exploitation at the state corporation tasked with caring and protecting the welfare of adopted children.

According to the investigative piece, the state agency based along Lang’ata Road has been using vulnerable children for profit, subjecting them to more misery and minting millions in the process.

Moments before the Director of Public Prosecutions gave the orders, former presidential candidate Martha Karua, in a tweet, challenged the Kenya National Human Rights Commission to act on the Sunday Standard. She tagged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions DPP) alongside the tweet.

“... What are you doing about the expose by last Sunday Standard on grave abuse of children by the Child Welfare Society of Kenya @DCI_Kenya @ODPP_KE,” tweeted Martha
