How firms are minting millions for no work done in regions

Contractors in Nyanza counties could be minting millions of shillings from public coffers without doing any work, doing a shoddy job or not completing tasks.

A report by Auditor General Edward Ouko has revealed glaring discrepancies in the completion of projects done by the six Nyanza counties in 2017.

They include the construction of the controversial Kanyakwar perimeter fence in Kisumu at a cost of Sh3.9 million. The contractor was fully paid despite not doing any work.

In addition, two different contractors pocketed millions of shillings for doing the same job at Nyahera Resource Centre.

One of the contractors was paid Sh2.1 million while another contractor awarded the same tender and paid Sh1.9 million.

The building has yet to be completed, according to the auditor general’s report.

At Sondu market, a contractor could have been paid despite not completing a market shade.

In Siaya, the county government paid contractors millions of shillings for projects that were either poorly done or were abandoned.

In Nyamira County, some Sh13.2 million was paid to contractors for the construction of wards as well as doctors' offices. However, the project had stalled.
