Relief for farmers as 104,000 metric tonnes of fertilisers expected end month

ELDORET, KENYA: A consignment of 104,000 metric tonnes of subsidized fertilizer is expected at the Port of Mombasa by the end of the month ahead of the planting season.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett dispelled fears from farmers that delay in ordering and importing this year's fertilizer supplies could affect food production.

Bett blamed logistic issues for the delay in importing the fertilizer but assured farmers supplies will be available to them in different depots across the country beginning of March.

"The Ministry is expecting 104,000 Metric Tonnes of fertilizer at the Mombasa port by February29. It will immediately be dispatched to different depots across the country and will be available to farmers by the first week of March," he said.

With the planting season already underway in sections of the country, the CS assured that no farmer had been inconvenienced by shortage of fertilizers saying that his ministry had already provided supplies to these regions.
