NAIROBI: Cabinet Secretary Information Communication and Technology, ICT, Fred Matiang’i has been appointed a member of the ITU/UNESCO Broadband Commission for Digital Development for a two-year period. The Commission advocates for the vital role broadband networks, applications, and services and how high-speed connectivity can be leveraged to help accelerate progress towards the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and future sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “The Broadband Commission is uniquely placed as a vehicle to showcase and document ICT and broadband based technologies being used to accelerate sustainable development,” said ITU Secretary General, Houlin Zhao. In his letter of acceptance, Matiangi said the Commission represents the transformative technologies that “we increasingly see as major drivers for sustainable development as well as citizen and Gender empowerment.’’
