Govt pledges support for Mathare fire victims after tragedy claimed six lives

[Edward Kiplimo,Standard] The Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes, Geoffrey Ruku, has announced full government support for victims of the tragic fire that ravaged Mathare 4B estate in Nairobi earlier this week. The blaze claimed six lives and left dozens of families homeless. Relief efforts are underway, including emergency supplies, resettlement assistance, and long-term recovery plans. Speaking during a visit to the affected area, CS Ruku affirmed that the government, through the State Department for Special Programmes, will fully cover all medical expenses for the injured and mortuary bills for the deceased. In addition, families who lost homes and property will receive building materials to aid in reconstruction, and two churches that were destroyed in the blaze will also be rebuilt with government assistance. "It is the government's duty to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens. That is why the President and his Deputy have sent me here, not only to offer condolences but to deliver tangible support," CS Ruku said. The visit came as part of the government's emergency response to the tragedy. Accompanied by Mathare MP Anthony Oluoch, the Cabinet Secretary also distributed emergency food supplies and basic necessities to the affected families Despite efforts by five firefighting trucks from the Nairobi County Government, the blaze caused extensive destruction, highlighting the unique challenges of informal settlements, such as poor housing conditions, narrow and inaccessible roads, and inadequate drainage, which significantly hamper emergency response efforts. "The tragedy is painful, but we want to ensure those affected can begin to rebuild their lives with dignity and support," Ruku added. He emphasized that the national government is working closely with Nairobi County to implement long-term safety measures and improve infrastructure to mitigate future disasters. CS Ruku also pointed to the government's broader agenda of upgrading informal settlements through housing initiatives like the Mukuru Affordable Housing Project, launched by President William Samoei Ruto. "These projects aim to uplift the living standards of slum residents and reduce vulnerability to tragedies like the one experienced in Mathare." MP Oluoch lauded the government's swift and compassionate response, noting it reflects a commitment to safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of all Kenyans.
