Leave Annan out of ICC debacle, he did his part

The debate on how to try post-election violence suspects has led to politicians drawing battle lines for one another.

Others accuse former UN Secretary-General and chief mediator Kofi Annan of hurting healing wounds by presenting the secret ‘Waki Envelope’ to the International Criminal Court Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo.

But undoubtedly, Dr Annan did the best for the country and specifically for the common man.

Our leaders are busy politicking and Annan — as a diplomat, a human rights advocate, and a symbol of unity and peace — read their reluctance to act and decided to move. Annan did Kenyans proud.

Our politicians are gambling with our lives and Annan is right to crack the whip.

Annan did his part and now the onus is on our leaders to ensure justice prevails. Annan and Justice Philip Waki deserves a pat on the back.

Politicians won’t dupe us into believing otherwise. They should leave Annan out of this debate.

After Dr Kofi Annan handed over the ‘Waki List’ to Moreno-Ocampo, many suspicions have been pedalled all over. Of more interest is that some leaders are implicating themselves even before they are charged.

Their public utterances are a threat to national security. Seemingly, they intend to trigger yet another wave of tribal violence.

But Kenyans must be on the lookout.

Last year, such leaders incited us to chaos that left thousands dead and others internally displaced, yet they want to evade punishment by seeking cover in their tribes.

After last year’s experience, Kenyans now should shun political incitement from dishonest leaders because at long last, the common men will be the casualties.

We should remain united as the leaders carry their own crosses.
